This is a large design printed high up on the tie so it will show from beneath a jacket or vest, reaching ~18 inches (45 cm) up from the bottom point.

The final pipe is the "chanter," where the piper blows air in the end, and covers holes along the length of it with his or her fingers producing the melody. The bag portion is traditionally made from goat-skin, though now usually made of some boring, synthetic tech fabric instead.
